“Earn your diploma at home!” This is the most familiar banner that online schools tell potential students who are on the lookout for more convenient and practical schooling. While there is nothing wrong with seeking education from online sources, you have to be aware of a kind of mischief in online schools, known as online diploma mills.

Online diploma mills front themselves as online schools, but in reality, they are just organizations that issue unapproved and unofficial college degrees. The requirements are usually very easy; sometimes, you just produce some kind of a research paper and that’s it, you get your diploma. The sad thing about this transaction is that online diploma mills just strip you of hard-earned money and run away after handing you the fake diploma. Avoid falling victim to these swindlers by following these tips:

* First and foremost, before you even say “Yes” to any online endeavor, be it for the purpose of education or business, check with the proper authorities if it is a legitimate company that you are bound to work with. Places to look include the Better Business Bureau, the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, or an attorney general.

* Look for the company’s certification. If the online school is for real, then it should at least present some kind of authorization from the authorities named above. If they cannot present any, contact the proper authorities to check on the details.

* Do not give out your credit card or bank account number unless you are sure that the company you are transacting with is legitimate. This guards against fraud or unauthorized transactions on your statements. If in case you have already given out your financial information and you suspect that something fraudulent is going on in your transaction with the alleged online diploma mill, contact your bank or card issuer right away and ask for a hold on the transaction.
