When I was very young, my parents would travel to different places and they would bring me along, exposing me to different cultures, traditions, and languages. This, coupled with my desire to see the world and talk to different people, prompted me to become a journalist. I also believe that in order for me to become a successful journalist, a graduate degree from an institution that provides high quality education is what I need. This is why I’m applying for the graduate program at ________. This institution will greatly help me in achieving my goal of becoming an international journalist who is willing to take risks and join adventures so as to bring light to the truth.
I. My family as a great influence
A. Traveling with my parents – My parents are avid travelers and they would always bring me along in their trips. These travels exposed me to different cultures at a very young age. This is one of the reasons why I want to become a journalist; I want to see cultures and different kinds of people.
B. Spending summers at England – To sharpen my English-speaking and writing skills, I would spend summers with an England-based host family.
C. My grandfather’s publishing business – Another influential family member is my grandfather who owned a publishing business. When I was young, I would go to my grandfather’s office and watch editors and writers do their work.
II. Other people who have influenced me to become a journalist
A. Mr. Peter Cole’s influence on me – I was lucky to be included in Mr. Peter Cole’s journalism class in Sheffield, England. As a well-known journalist and editor, Mr. Cole shared with the class fascinating stories and adventures he had as a journalist.
B. David Randall’s definition of a journalist – David Randall’s definition of journalists as people who find things out, take risks, and face chaos to uncover the truth also made me decide to pursue a course in journalism.
III. My education, training, and skills
A. Education at different universities – My experiences in the ___________ and __________ helped me develop vital journalist skills.
B. Other skills – I am also into dancing, theater, and singing. I am also a budding photographer, which can really help me capture images as I write about the truth.
