Law school admissions officers have noticed the decrease of applications. What is going on? Are people no longer dreaming of becoming lawyers? Here is a look at some of the factors that are affecting the application numbers and what they could mean to law education:
Fewer students are taking the LSAT.
Well, it looks like fewer people are interested in law school because fewer are mustering enough energy to take the LSAT. This is the sort of disinterest that will worry law schools the most.
Percentage of people doing exceptionally well in the LSAT has dropped.
People still take the LSAT. Unfortunately, based on the latest statistics, LSAT takers with scores from 175 to 180 have dropped 13.6%. There is generally a significant drop in numbers in people getting 160 and above. Compare this to the 4.3% drop in LSAT takers getting 140 and below. Those with lower scores may end up getting into the lower-tier
law schools. Those that have higher chances of getting into high tier law schools, however, have decreased.
Prospective students are not convinced about the job availability.
It all boils down to the fact that prospective students no longer believe that a career in law is lucrative. What they fail to understand is that top-ranking students still have a great chance at an amazing career. Unfortunately, prospective top-ranking students have decreased.
Hopefully, prospective law students who are confident that they can do well will come running back to take that LSAT and enroll into a top law school.
